Before Friday's Deposit Lands, Recheck Your OAS Clawback at 15 Cents per Dollar

Most people who worry about a smaller pension deposit skip one step: checking which year's income the deduction is based on. Get that wrong and you budget for money that was never coming.

If you've ever lined up your pension deposit against the bills due that week and wondered whether a smaller payment meant something had gone wrong, this check is for you. You may have seen the clawback described as 15 cents per dollar, as Girard Wealth puts it, where you used to read 15%. They are the same rate, and nothing new is being charged. An accurate check depends on three things: the right income year, the right threshold and the right payment details.

Work out your OAS deduction from the right year's income

Match the year. OAS deductions from July 2026 through June 2027 are based on your 2025 return and the $93,454 threshold. Many people reach for the 2026 figure of $95,323 because it is the newest one. That figure applies to the following payment year.

Use the right income figure. Recovery tax uses net world income as CRA defines it. That number can differ from your taxable income and from the cash that actually landed in your account. Start with your notice of assessment.

Run the formula. Multiply the income above the threshold by 0.15. If you are below the threshold, nothing is recovered, and the recovery can never exceed your OAS. For example, net income of $103,454 is $10,000 over the threshold. That works out to $1,500 a year, or about $125 a month. Treat the result as an estimate, not a promise about any single deposit.

Check the deposit against your benefit records

Separate the three benefits. OAS, CPP and GIS arrive as separate amounts. The recovery formula applies only to OAS. GIS follows its own income test for lower-income recipients, and any of these payments can carry income tax withholding you requested.

Confirm the date. Check Canada's official benefit payment calendar rather than assuming the money arrives Friday.

Ask before you cut. If an amount doesn't match your records, ask Service Canada for an explanation before you rework the household budget.

A new way of describing the rate does not mean a new deduction. To start, put your OAS payment record beside the expected bank deposit and compare one benefit to one line.
